Skyscrapers are hard to build and even harder to make money from. Perhaps that is why they hold such an enduring fascination. “The problem of the tall office building”, wrote Louis Sullivan, an architect, in 1896, “is one of the most stupendous, one of the most magnificent opportunities that the Lord of Nature in His beneficence has ever offered to the proud spirit of man.”
According to Emporis, a firm which tracks skyscrapers, Roughly 8% of the world's stock of tall buildings is currently under construction. About 40% of the world's 200 tallest buildings have been completed since 2000.
