When Reporters Are Targets
  Nov. 21

More than 500 journalists have been killed in war zones in the past decade, according to the Reporters Without Borders. That toll has been particularly high in Iraq, where 86 journalists have died since the war began in March 2003.

Steven Vincent, 49, was one of the victims. A freelancer working without the security and insurance support provided by major media organizations, he first went to Iraq in September 2003. In August 2005, The New York Times published his expose about lawlessness in British-controlled Basra, typified by a hit squad who toured in a “white death car.” Just two days later that car returned for him. After his death, his widow, Lisa Ramaci-Vincent, created a foundation to help the families of freelance war reporters killed during the course of their work.
